Setting up test domain

G

Gene

Hi all. I want to set up a simple domain, ie, one AD
domain controller (w2k server)and an XP Pro workstation
connected by a hub. Is that feasible? When setting up the
server, it asks if I want the server to be in a domain ...
which doesn't exist yet so it can't have a computer
account. I'll also need to configure DHCP, DNS and WINS.
From working on this yesterday, the DNS server (on the
single server)is also an issue to completeing the AD
wizard. Ultimately, the XP Pro machine will need to
authenicate with the AD domain controller server.

Am I totally off track? Does anyone have a simple strategy
or method for getting these two computers to talk? A link
or idea? I appreciate the help. Thanks!

I know that every AD domain has to start with the first
server so this should be pretty simple, I would think, but
I'm missing something.

Hi

It is possible to set a domain with only two computers. But it is not
necessary that you should create domain for talking between two computer
(you can set a work group if it is less then 10 systems)

When you are installing server you should install as a stand alone server.
(With out DNS)
Then run DCPROMO and create new domain, new Tree, new forest.
It will automatically configure the DNS server.
DHCP is optional you can set is later,
WINS you no need if all computer are 2000 and above

May be this link is useful to you
