Setting up/Connecting to a work network...

I work in a school that has a computer lab with internet access.

The computers are linked through a router.

These computers have programs and files that we must use at certain times.
Specifically MS Access, that opens up a report card program that updates the
students record on the server.

The network is basically run by the assistant principal and whatever we want
to do we can.

What I am asking, is there a simple way to connect to the school server from
home so that these programs/files can be accessed and updated?

Does anyone have information, or a website I could go to that has the
answers to what I am looking for? (Or a better newsgroup to post this
question on)

Thanks for any and all advice!
