Setting up ActiveDirectory

Angel Massa

I'm tring to configure a Server 2003 using ActiveDirectory and DNS. I've
installed the services in the server and created a zone for the domain. I
also created a new user.

But when I try to joint a Windows XP workstation to the domain it says the
name doesn't exist in the DNS server.

When want to connect to the domain I'm asked for a user name and computer
name. But I'm not sure what names to use.

Do I have to use netBIOS names as "UserName" and "ComputerName" or maybe
(e-mail address removed) and computer.domainname.local?

Also when it ask for a computer name it's the workstation name or the server
name?

I'm new on this and I will be very happy if someone can help me with this.

Best regards,
Angel.

The first thing you need to do is be sure that your DNS zone is Active
Directory-integrated. If it is not you need to delete and re-create the
zone as AD-integrated.

Once that's properly configured, you need to configure the XP workstation to
look only at the AD DNS server for name resolution. The AD DNS will either
need to use root hints or forwarders to your ISP DNS to resolve names
outside the network for itself and your clients PCs.

Finally, right-click My Computer on the XP computer, select Properties, then
the Computer Name tab. Click the Change button here. Leave the PC name
alone unless you want to change it. Enter the name of the domain to join.
When asked for a name and password, use a domain administrator name and
password.

Thanks for your reply Richard. My hair is starting to fall trying to make AD
to run.

Actually I've reinstalled the services using the wizards. I think that my
problem is DNS related as I can access the DNS server on the Windows 2003
server from my workstation.

The server uses himself as DNS server with forwardings to the ISP DNS
servers for Internet adresses resolutions.

I've tried the dnslookup comand and I get a time out. The network conections
work fine as I can ping my workstation from the server.

I think I'm missing something. :-(

Regards,
Angel.

DNSLOOKUP? Don't know that one.

Anyway, if you're 100% sure that the DC now has an Active
Directory-integrated forward DNS lookup zone correctly configured, the next
step is to set up the client PC (the one you're trying to join to the
domain) to use ONLY that IP address for DNS lookup, and see if it can indeed
do so.

Hi Richard,

I mean nslookup.

Finally I get it to work reinstalling the system. I think that the first
time I added the DNS and AD services something went wrong. Not everything
seems to work as espected. :)

Now I need to learn more about the possibilities of AD and how to manage all
the users and clients.

Thanks for your help!

Best regards,
Angel.
