Setting up a header with chapter numbers and page numbers

By default, the header appears on every page of a document. If you don't
want a header on the first page, then you need to check "Different first
page" and leave the First Page Header blank. I believe there are some tips
you could use in http://home.earthlink.net/~wordfaqs/HeaderFooter.htm

Did you get your StyleRef working with the \n switch?

Okay:

If by that you mean that you do not want the header to appear on the
first
page of each Chapter (=Section), then after setting up the header, click
on
the Page Setup button on the Headers and Footers tool bar (it looks like
an
open book) and then go to the layout tab and check the Different first
page
box, then click on OK. Then you can set up a different (empty if
required)
header for the first page and have something else in the header for the
second and subsequent pages.

No, I _do_ want the header to appear on the first page of each chapter
(which are continued section breaks). Chapters don't start a new page;
they're run in with the rest of the text, with Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc in
the middle of the page or wherever the new chapter starts. I just want the
header to reflect the correct chapter number on the page the header appears
on. So I don't set up the header and click on the settings for different
first page, since I don't want no header on the first page of each
chapter. I do want a header on the first page of each chapter.

If you want the header to reflect the chapter that begins on the same page
(not a very conventional layout, but that's irrelevant), then you need to
include the \l switch. Have you read the switch information in the StyleRef
Help topic?

Perhaps it would help you to read "WD97: How to Use STYLEREF Field to Place
Chapter Information in Header" at
