Setting Timeout

When I first got my computer, with WinXP Pro, it would go to the login screen
after about 10 minutes. This somehow got changed to about an hour. I want
to set it back to 10 minutes but I don't know how to get to that setting.
There is no screensaver, it just goes to the login screen. I can also get to
this screen by choosing 'switch user' but I want it to go automatically. Can
anyone help, please?

Screensaveer is set to 'None' and there is no timeout setting therre. What I
am looking for is a automatic return to the logon screen after a set time.

Hi,

In the control panel/power options, set the system to standby after 10
minutes, then set the advanced tab to prompt for password on resumption.

When I go to control panel/power options, all I see are setting for Turn off
monitor and Turn off hard disks. I don't see a standby option.

I already have the monitor turning off after 20 min. I don't have any need
to turn off the hard disks. All I want to do is ro return the system to the
way it was when I got it. That is to say, after ten minutes, the system goes
to the switch user screen automatically. This is not a screensaver, and not
turning off hard disks. I don't know what controls it but that is what I am
trying to find out.

The settings now are such that the monitor turns off after 20 minutes. When
I activate the keyboard or mouse, the monitor comes on but I am still in my
user account. Before, when I caused the monitor to come back on, I was in
the switch user screen and I had to reenter my password to get to my account.
I don't know how to explain it any clearer than this. If this is still not
understandable, then I give up.

Justin, did you enable the "prompt for password" on the advanced tab of
Power Options?

All you should have to do is set the screensaver tab of display properties
to "on resume, display welcome", then set the time equal to the monitor
standby time you selected in power options. Keep in mind too that the very
definition of standby is a low power state. If you are not allowing the hard
drive to spin down, then it cannot possibly enter this state.

Okay, you have solved my problem. It was the screensaver setting that I was
missing. I had accidentally set the screensaver to (none), when actually it
had been set to "blank". With the "blank" setting, I can then set "on
resume, display welcome", which is exactly what I wanted. Thank you very
much for resolving this dilemma. It was a simple solution, but I just didn't
see it until you pointed it out.

Kind regards,

Justin
