Setting tabs

I set the tab stop position at 5.5" and the default tab stop at 0.5" but when
I hit the tab key, the curson moves all the way across the page to the end of
the line, ignoring the tab stops. What is happening?

Is it ignoring the 5.5" or simply going immediately there? When you
explicitly set tabs, pressing the Tab key takes you to the first tab you
set. All of the default tabs (not explicitly set) to the left of the
position you set are ignored. Otherwise, you would never be able to
accomplish one-tab horizontal positioning of the first tabbed item in a
line.
