Setting Permissions on Files...

Ok Folks,

There goes a _HARD_ one....

My user profile [ Djeizon \ Administrators ] got corrupted and after loading
Windows nothing would operate properly. I had my personal folder [
C:\Documents and Settings\Djeizon ] turned on as private folder, with
restricted access to that account.

So I created another user [ DJ \ Administrators ] but I realized I was
unable to access my old folder because it was restricted to that profile.

I used the account [ Administrator \ Administrators ] to take a look, and
for my surprise, all files were unaccessible as well.

I tried applying CALCS as administrator to regain access over the files, but
it can't recursively modify any file permission and the list returns as
files saying ACCESS DENIED.

Surprisinly with my [ DJ \ Administrators ] account, I am able to recover
the permission of files through the UI, using the properties, security
settings tab. But it never works recursively. I have to have file by file,
group of files, or group of folders. But never files and folders. And this
is going to take a long time when talking about 15 GB of data.

Not even CALCS and the user interface are doing it recursively and I am
issuing the right commands.

I can't understand... I am plainly using the Administrator account to MODIFY
those files settings and even like that I get access denied with CALCS. I
simply can't understand. Is this some annoying new bug in XP? I remember
it wasn't like this before... Isn't administrator supposed to be God, just
like "root" is in Linux?

This is the command I use to try to unlock the files:

CACLS C:\Documents and Settings\Djeizon\* /E /T /C /G Everyone:F
Administrators:F System:F

Even as administrator, it is NOT modifying the files... ACCESS DENIED....

Am I doing something wrong?

The files are not EFS encrypted !!!! So this is very weird....

Please post solutions!!!!!!! I need to give full access to everyone in a
recursively form, to all files and folders.

And yes, I tell the GUI to make it inherit..... etc etc... and this is not
working....

SOLVED MYSELF.
THE TRICK WAS TO TAKE OWNERSHIP, BEFORE APPLYING PERMISSIONS.

Along these same lines, is there a way to do the permission resetting for the
entire active directory membership automatically? We upgraded to 2003 server
and somewhere along the way lost the connection between the active directory
users and their App Data, Home folder, and desktop folders. I can reset the
permissions manually and I have started this but I am only up to the F's. Any
ideas?
