Setting a database password

Access 2003:

I'm trying to set a password on a database, but when I try to use the
command, I get a message saying I have to open the database in exclusive
mode. I followed the directions in Help, and Access tells me that the
database is opened in exclusive mode (there's a checkmark beside the "Open
Exclusive" option), yet when I try to set the password, I'm told that I
need to do what I think I've already done.

The database was originally created in Access 2000, and the database is in
Access 2000 format. Is this the reason I can't set a password? If so, is
there a way I can convert the database into a format that will allow the
password feature to work?

I found out how to convert the database from 2003 to 2003 format, but the
problem persists. I'm still unable to set the password, even though it
looks as though the database is opened in exclusive mode.

Try...
Open Access
File, Open.. and select the mdb file, and then in the lower right of the dialog click the dropdown beside Open and choose Open Exclusive.

If that fails then try creating a desktop shortcut with the following in the target
"path to msaccess.exe" "path to mdb" /excl

I guess I didn't make myself clear. I have already done this. When I click
on the arrow to the right of the open button, the option "Open Exclusive"
already has a check mark beside it. However, once the database is open I'm
told that I need to open it in exclusive mode in order to set a password.
If that fails then try creating a desktop shortcut with the following in the target
"path to msaccess.exe" "path to mdb" /excl

This worked. I was able to set the password.

I think I know what happened. Whenever I clicked on the arrow beside the
"open" button, the "Open Exclusive" option was already checked. When I
would click on that option, what I was probably doing was toggling that
option OFF.

It would appear that "Open Exclusive" is the default option for opening
databases in Access 2003, because if I simply double-click on any .mdb
file, when it opens I am allowed to set a password.

Thanks for your help.
