Services .EXE - Preparing network connections - error 128

When starting up the Windows2000 Pro workstation, when it
gets to the Preparing Network Connections, the message
appears that the system is shutting down in 60 seconds,
save your work and the system will be restarted. The fix
is to go into safe mode, regedit and remove values from
some of the keys.
The problem is that even in safe mode, the system still
restarts after 60 seconds. What's the alternative?

Welcome to the world of the Blaster worm.

You need to remove your cable from the network, boot the
machine, do a quick Regedit to stop the worm from loading
in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, let
it reboot, then install the MS03-039 patch to prevent
yourself from getting re-infected.

If you've tried the regedit before and it still keeps
rebooting itself, you're probably getting re-infected by
some host on the network. By the way, you're probably
also re-infecting them too.
