What would cause this to happen.

The XP SP2 box just freezes.

Is this the cause of it, or does it freeze because something stop it?

Hello,

System Restore to a point where the problem was not there in safe mode
command prompt

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449 ( How to start the System Restore
tool by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP)
for a detailed guide on this.

Note that when you do a System Restore, you will lose configuration changes
that you did from the point that your restored to. So if you had installed
any new software, it will be affected.

If the problem is still there after you restore, you can always undo the
restoration. See the link.

It can also be a hardware or driver problem, if the freezes still happen
after you restore, you will need to start diagnosing your hardware.
