Help,

I am trying to install Service Pack 2 from the Windows Update Website the
system is not progressing at all. The windows is stuck at:

"Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup
-Updating your system wizard
-Finishing Installation
-Details: Running Process after Install"

The laptop computer has been stuck at this prompt for hours (8 plus).
Please advise what to do. I know if you power off the system then it will
corrupt the OS. But what will happen if I hit the Cancel button. Will this
also corrupt the OS. Please advise what to do.

The mouse is not frozen and I can move the screen around. So, do I click on
the "Cancel" button located on the Window Installation window?

If you install SP2 with no /n option (I think, it is so, and you simply ran the
update) -- it ought to revert back the changes then. But let's wait for a while:
probably someone will give the other solution in the nearest time.

The cancel button is a safe option. That is why MS put it there, as your
safe bail out option.

I am at a lost about the Service Pack update. Any other advice will help.
One other additional thing, the Windows Update icon at the bottom of the
screen is still stating download 54% but I cannot open the icon and the
Service Pack is still at the same prompt.

I tried the Cancel Button. It stated cancelling but nothing happens then the
window exited. I tried to do a shutdown, to see if the OS will prompt a
restart of the installation but the windows prompted something like "cannot
restart system while Service Pack is updating" with an "Ok" button. I am
still waiting for the Service Pack to complete at the same point.

I got this same exact message while trying to install SP2 FIVE DIFFERENT
TIMES (4 times via the website and 1 time using the SP2 CD). This was on a
computer that was barely a year-old and had just had all of the SP1 updates
installed after a complete format of the hard drive so everything was in
pristine condition and should have worked (one would hope anyway).

After the 5th failure I just gave up completely on SP2. It's a shame
because it has a lot of neat features in it, but for now I just rely on virus
software, a software firewall and a DSL router...so far so good. The only
other option would be to buy a new copy of Windows XP that already has SP2
loaded on it, but that seems like a waste of money. The download shouldn't
have so many problems in the first place.
