Server Swap

Mat

I have a windows 2000 Server running Active directory. We have a new
Server with 2003 SBS on it and want to swap one for the other.

I could go around removing all the PC's from the domain, setting up
users and passwords, rejoining the new domain and then copying data
back to new profiles in XP.

But im hoping there is an easier (sorry more efficient) way.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks

You could migrate the objects (groups, users, computers) using ADMTv3 and
File System data using ROBOCOPY.

Make sure you get the latest robocopy version (w2k3)

Thanks

What will I need to do at the client side or will ADMT take all of the
AD settings?

All work should be done on the ADMT console. ADMT can even move the
machines to the new domain and reboot the client computers from the console.

Are you committed to a new domain, or merely trying to switch
hardware?

What is the real (precise) goal?

You may have decided that a new domain is the way to go when
that is not (or is) necessary....

I'm keeping the same domain, data structure on the new server etc, just
want to swap the hardware out. The ony change is 2000 to 2003 SBS

Then the LIKELY right way to go is to get the current OS
onto the new hardware and then UPGRADE to the new
version.

There are various ways to do this, including just moving the
drive or doing a backup/restore.

Backup/Restore is best done with either 3rd party disaster
recorvery capable software OR with ASR (Automatic System
Recovery.)

If you have problems RUNNING when the system is restored
to the new system (without ASR which essentially does the
following) then use a REPAIR install over the top of the transferred
system to clean it up for the new hardware.

There are other ways, like using WinPE, BartPE, or a Linux
boot CDRom to copy from one drive to another....

Using a NEW Domain is never going to be quite as seamless
as moving the current DC server & domain -- and with any of
the backup/restore methods you will always have the original
in case it doesn't work as you expect.
