Server service hung on startup

Will Niccolls

Hi~

XP Pro, compaq laptop. Worked fine for two years.

Now, the Server service hangs on starting. You can see the event log entries
below. Boot the laptop, a few services start (see first listed Info event),
then nothing for 15 minutes, at which time the error is logged, then the
Server service starts, and all is well.

During that 15 minutes, the taskbar, Start menu, etc are all
unavialable--the hourglass is in effect....

I've tried the netsh ip int reset command, also the winsock reset command,
without effect.

Any ideas?

Ok, just trying to bump this after another reasonable wait. Anyone have any
ideas?

Thanks!

Thank you for the link, but the particular error wasn't listed.

However, deleting all printers fixed it. Another poorly handled error.

For the record, deleting all printers fixed this issue, a workaround was
also to terminate the spool service.

There was at least one printer in the printers list that didn't exist
anymore. The default printer worked fine, once the machine booted
compelety, after 20 minutes. My guess is that server service was hung
waiting for a response from the spooler, which was waiting for the printer,
all with 1200 second timeout.

Remember, start menu and taskbar items were hourglassed during that time...I
could use desktop shortcuts to open items...just not the start menu.

Anyway, perhaps this information will help someone in the future!
