server name in login window

Kristof

Hi all,

I'm using a KVM switch to access some servers.
The problem is , this KVM doesn't allow me to enter machine name in the
setup. so I'm always surfing each sreen until I found the good one.

I know (because I saw it) there's a wayunder 2000 (server only maybe?) to
add text in the top blue bar of the login window when machine starts. I'd
like to put there the name of the machine, like that I knwo which one it is
before login in.

Does anyone knows how and where to do this? registry I guess but where and
which key?

Thanks

Hmm. Assuming the systems are logged off and displaying the system
splash screen, why not modify the graphics file to include the
Servername? I've used that method before successfully. The file(s)
are %systemroot%winnt.bmp or winnt256.bmp. They are System and
Hidden IIRC. Ensure the file size, resolution and color depth are
maintained. Need I say make backups first?

Or some KVM's allow you to specify overlay text when switching.

Hi Mark

Thanks for the tips but apparently, this tips works only in NT4 machine.
Not on 2000 server.
I have nowhere any files like that and options were set to see hidden files

They are IIRC both +H and +S (system)
Did you (Folder Options)
[ ] Hide protected operating system files

Or from CMD
dir /a %systemroot%\w*.bmp

Mark,

Apparently, after some research, I saw in Windows 2000 server , that the
name of the splash screens were lanmant.bmp and lanma256.bmp.

But the splash screen is not useful for me as the machines are already
booted.
Do you know were is the file of the bitmap visible in the login window, the
window where the 3 fields (username, password and domain) appears?

thank you

Appologies. I should have rembered that! Sorry.

No I don't off hand.
Unless you leave the servers actually logged in though, you can still
use a BMP file. Set the Desktop Wallpaper (in registry) for the
System account. IOW the background when no user is logged on at the
console.

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\
Wallpaper=

Or maybe re-post and see if anyone can actually answer your original
question. :)

Hi
I think you'll find these dialogs are resources in \system32\msgina.dll
I recommend you find another way (e.g. background, last username etc)

You might be looking for the 'optional legal announcement' -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
