Seriously confused about PSU for A8N-SLI - help please!

Philip G

Can anyone please tell me which of these three Antec 550W PSUs I should buy
for my new PC build (or list a better one I could get from the UK)?

http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/caseandcaseaccessories/productVi

ew.htm?quicklinx=2QRS

http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/caseandcaseaccessories/productVi
ew.htm?quicklinx=2QRV

My system will include two SATA HDDs (RAID 1) (maybe four), one graphics
card (SLI sometime in the future), and an IDE DVD-writer. Based around the
A8N-SLI Deluxe.

Thanks! :)

Antec cannot market worth crap. They refuse to make manuals for
their 550W power supplies. And they make it difficult to see what
connectors are on their supplies. In any case, this is what I was
able to dig up.

From DABS:
"EPS12V version for servers.
What is EPS12V? EPS12V is a special, non-ATX standard adopted by
the Server System Infrastructure (SSI) group to provide a more
powerful and stable environment for critical server-based systems
and applications. EPS12V equipment is not compatible with standard
ATX or ATX12V PCs found in homes and offices. Power supplies built
to the EPS12V standard include a 24-pin motherboard power connector
and an 8-pin +12V connector. However, since some server motherboards
also use other connectors, TruePower 550EPS12V comes with 4-pin and
8-pin +12V and 6-pin Aux. power connectors for wide SSI / EPS12V
motherboard compatibility and user versatility."

Likely this one. 550EPS. Although Antec didn't mention it, has the
disk drive connectors carrying fan power ("Fan_only_drive_conn")
like the other units. That four pin connector has two wires and
carries a 12V output that varies with temp inside the PSU. I use
those on my "low power" PC, as an easy way to drop fan speed. You
need a disk drive to three pin adapter to use it. There are some
pictures here.

There are a couple models of A8N motherboard. If spending that
kind of cash on a motherboard, it pays to read the manual
before buying. There is a page on power needs. Pg.51 of e1889.
Pg.50 of e1815b. It says 25A on +12V is good to have.

I think I would buy the EPS550, as it has the 24 pin connector.
One thing that bothers me a bit about recent Antec supplies, is
they really could use a few more drive connectors. (It is not
the connectors, as much as it is cables. When you have aux power
requirements that are supposed to use a single cable exclusively,
like the older video cards, cables can get used up quickly.)
You won't need the eight pin connector, which is a good thing.
I say that, because there are different standards for the wiring
of the eight pin, and you have to be careful with those.

In terms of illustrating the various power supply standards, I
like this company. If you look in the "dual cpu" section, and
click the links, they have pictures of the connector pinouts,
and it is a great way to learn about all the more exotic
standards.

They even have a supply intended for SLI. It has PCI Express power
connectors, for if you ever use video cards that have
the special six pin connector. Not too many power supplies
have that - with the Truepower EPS550, you would need some
kind of adapter to go from the 2x4 ATX12V, to the PCI-Express
2x3 pin connectors.

I really struggle sometimes with Dabs categorisation - which categories are
these in? I look in case & accessories and couldn't find them (although the
links work).

They seem a little expensive for your requirements.

Yeah, Dabs' categories are a little crazy. :)

home > components > case & case accessories > Computer Case Modifications
& Accessories
They seem a little expensive for your requirements.

I know, but I want something reasonably futureproof, and if I'm to have 4
HDDs and 2 graphics cards one day (maybe within 6 months), I'd rather buy
something that's going to be reliable. The motherboard apparently
requires a minimum 400W PSU.

Cheers,

Philip

The pcpowerandcooling SLI PSU looks nice, but there seems to be no UK
distributor - and it'll be more pricey...

I shall go with the Antec EPS12V. Thanks again for your help! :)
