Serious context menu problems in Explorer.

Have you recently added a new phot/imaging software ?
Have you checked in registry to what file type the .jpg extension is
assosiated, and what shell actions are there for it ( to take the example
you gave)

I have had after some software install some file extensions associated to
new fiel types and no more working adequately.
Look at HKEY_CLASSES_ROT\.jpg
I have it associated to jpegfile type
Look further in same registry hive for jpegfile wher e you will find an
entry named shell where all actions the context-menu will show are given.
See if that is correct ( that is displays the added entry you have build in
explorer->tools->file types)

I am using WinAssociate for these adaptations of context menus ( PC Magazine
utility), and have recently had the problem after an install of FoxitReader
: all entries I had before for pdf files disappeared. But Foxit had changed
the pdf file to another file type ( from AcroExch.Document to pdfdocument or
something like that)
I simply reassociated the .pdf to AcroExch.Document in the registry and got
my associations back)

Of course doing that for all file types would be impossible.

Have you tried repairing or uninstall/reinstall of AVG ?

I just installed XP on a freshly formatted hard drive and installed all
of my programs. Now, for some reason, I'm having all kinds of context
menu problems in Windows Explorer.

1. when I right click on files that have an "Open With >" dropdown
list entry, selecting that entry does nothing. That is to say,
the entries don't show.

2. I am unable to see my "Scan with AVG" entry on the context menu.

3. I can't add anything. I mean, I can add things, but they don't
show. For instance, if I do the following in Explorer:

1. Click on Tools/Folder Options.../File Types
2. Select a file type, say (for example) JPG
3. Click the "Advanced" button
4. Click the "New..." button
5. Create a new action (fill in both the Action and "Application
used to perform action:" and then press the "OK" button)

The new action will now be listed in the "Edit File Type" window.
However, if I "OK" out of everything and then right click on a .jpg
file, there is no new context menu entry. On the other hand, if I go
back into the Tools/Folder Options.../File Types "Edit File Type"
window, it still lists the new action!

Please help me. After four straight days of trying to do everything
correctly and STILL messing up, I am about to run screaming into the
street, up into the woods and climb a tree.

I really don't want to have to go back to Millennium Edition.

Start with the McAfee module in the below Multi AV Scanning Tool.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

David, there is absolutely no way that I have a virus. I've been at this
far too long. When I installed XP, I never went online until I first
installed Kerio firewall (after disabling the Windows built in
firewall). Then the first thing I did online was to install every update
possible at the Windows update site. Then downloaded and installed AVG.

Only after doing all of that did I start installing my programs, and
that was with my cable modem turned off.

I don't think it was AVG causing the problem because it showed up long

Ted,
Thanks very much for replying! 80)>

Yes, I did. Both 1.1 and 2.0. Is that the problem? Man, that would
really be bad. Since neither is uninstallable, I would have to do a
total reinstall of the OS. Oh well, I'm almost at that point right now
anyway.

T

Ted

1.1 is OK, but 2.0 might be a problem.
I am sorry I am little late, I just remembered and
there was a fix for it.

To add/remove the context menu when you right click on the desktop,
or when you right click in Explorer in the results pane,
apply the following Windows NT Registry hack:
Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Name: NoViewContextMenu
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0=Disable
Value: 1=Enable

J

John Corliss

Ted,
Thanks a bunch for trying, but that wasn't it. Looks like it's time
to start backing up my data files for a total reinstall. And with
Product Activation, that should suck big time.

T

Ted

Did you restart computer ?
Are you logged in as an Administrator ?
If doesn't work then one of the programs you
installed must be corrupting the context menu.
I use AVG and works fine.

Yes (it's a one user XP Home with SP2 system)

I use AVG and works fine.

When I right click on an .exe file and look for a context menu item to
"Scan with AVG", there is none. This is in spite of my having gone into
AVG and configured it to do so.

I'm beginning to suspect more and more that it was my activating Windows
Media Player 10 that was responsible for the hosing of my file
associations and the problems in the context menu. That program took
over control of all of my media file types in spite of my telling it not
to. I had to go into it's options and deselect all of the file types.
