Seperate windows

I have Word 2003, and at one time, I was able to open documents in seperate
windows and toggle back and forth between them (seperately from the
side-by-side view).

Now, however, I can neither do that nor use the SbS feature. If I open two
documents, they open on top of each other, so if I close Word altogether,
both of them go away, instead of one remaining. I can't even substitute this
by using the SbS feature, because that's been grayed out.

Is there something I can download or some setting I can change?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | View | check the "Windows in
Taskbar" box | OK.
