Separating the laptop view from what is shown on the projector

Is there a way (in Powerpoint 2000) to select slides to project during a
presentation, regardless of the order they're in, seamlessly? In short, can
the presenter have a view of all slides on his laptop and the ability to
select any slide to project while the audience continues to see only the last
slide projected?

No, but if the presenter has a printout of, say, thumbnails with the number of
each slide written on it, he can enter e.g.:

42 EnterKey

to go to slide 42
