Separate PST folders for email accounts. How do I ...

I have two email accounts, e.g. (e-mail address removed) and (e-mail address removed). I
have set up two folders, one for Me and one for Wife, each having its own
Inbox, Sent Items, etc. But in 'Tools/Email accounts/View or Change' I seem
only to be able to assign BOTH accounts to one Folder (either Me or Wife).
AND, if someone sends email to (e-mail address removed), I get two copies, both in
the single Folder - one noted as being sent to Me@account... and one noted as
sent to Wife@account .....
I am confused. Could someone take pity on me please.

A couple of things are in play, but the most important is that both
addresses have separate mailboxes on the ISP's server. whether they're
separate or one is an alias of the other determines your choices. Your
version of Outlook also plays a part and you kept that a secret. The
following assumes you're using Outlook 98/2000 in Corporate Workgroup mode
or Outlook 2002/2003. (It's been too long since I used Outlook 97 to
address that version.)

If they're separate mailboxes (i.e., you and your wife use different
usernames/passwords to access the mailboxes on the ISP's server) your
choices are:

If you're using Windows 2000 or XP, your best approach would be for each of
you to have separate Windows usernames. This will allow each of you to
create your own mail profile and establish your own folder sets in Outlook
that, unless your accounts are administrator accounts, will prevent you from
seeing each other's mail, calendar, etc. You'll be completely separate.

If you wish to use the same Windows username, you can still create separate
mail profiles (Control Panel's Mail applet does that) and you can specify
separate folder sets for each of you, having Outlook prompt for which
profile to use when you start it.

If your ISP addresses share the same mailbox on the server, then you'll need
to use rules to separate incoming messages into separate folders. These
folders can be in the same or separate PSTs, but you _will_ share the other
folders like Calendar, Contacts, etc. You can create and use multiple
Contacts and Calendar folders if you wish, but only the default ones will be
active and allow reminders or alerts.

If anything is unclear, post back.

1,000 thanks. First, to clarify my situation:
Its Outlook 2003, and Windows XP Pro (maybe I shouldn't have had the
professional version - not being able to crack this problem)
The accounts are with Wanadoo, so we get to name the first part of the
address after the @ sign. So, we are, in effect:
(e-mail address removed); and (e-mail address removed). My guess is,
therefore, that we are 'sharing' one mailbox on the server. As mentioned I
have set up two separate PST file systems, each with Inbox, Calender,
Contacts, etc - one for Me and one for Wife. I'm happy to change that and do
something different. There are two windows llogins, although only one is ever
used. In truth all I was trying to do was to separate 'home' type emails from
'business' type emails - using, hopefully 2 separate Inboxes. Does that help
you better to help me. I'd be grateful if you can.

best regards

If you use the same username/password in the account to access the pop
server, then you are correct.

I explained exactly how to separate your mail in my prior post. What did
you not understand? I'll be more precise if you need clarification, but
you'll have to point out what you don't understand.

Sorry for delay - been busy.
I've used rules to require Me@ emails to go to my Inbox and Wife@ emails to
go to Wife Inbox. That seems to have worked but I get 2 copies, i.e. Me@ and
Wife@ appearing in each Inbox. In Tools/e-mail accounts, 'view or change
existing e-mail accounts', hitting 'Next' I can see both Me and Wife, with Me
as default, AND, 'Deliver new e-mail to the following location' shows
Me-Inbox, but although there is also Wife-Inbox, it seems that both Me and
Wife have to be linked to either Me-Inbox or Wife-Inbox, there seems no way
to link Me to Me-Inbox only, and Wife to Wife-Inbox only. Maybe thats why I'm
getting 2 copies.
I fear I have done something idiotic when first setting up Me and Wife.

Make sure you include the "stop procesing more rules" action on each rule.

I don't think you stated whether or not you use the same username/password
to access the two mailboxes, so we don't know whether or not the two
addresses are aliases of each other, but I suspect so. Also, you don't say
whether or not you've tried separate mail profiles.

Had only the default Outlook profile. Have set up one for Wife. But, If I
send myself an email - to 'Me@ouraccount' - I get a copy in the Inbox now
established for Wife profile. And the copy clearly shows he recipient address
as 'Me@ouraccount'.
In setting up Wife profile, I've made sure that Wife@ is the only account
related to the profile; and likelwise for the Outlook profile, which is for
Me@ouraccount.
And, yes, the Uname/passwords are the same.
As mentioned before, the two issues are about separating the emails but also
not getting duplicates. I fear that I am trying your patience.

Then there's nothing you can do other than use rules to delete all messages
whose recipient address does not contain the appropriate recipient, since as
far as Outlook (and, in fact, any POP client) is concerned there is only one
mailbox. Did you ask your ISP about getting separate mailboxes? My account
with SBC Yahoo, for example, allows ten completely distinct mail addresses,
each with its own username/password.

You are not, so let's keep going if you're of a mind to do so.
