Sent emails stay in outbox but are sent many times?

When sending emails with a large attachment, the message remains in the
outbox and a message appears that is has not been sent. I later find that the
email has been sent up to 8 times or until you delete from the outbox. It
never appears in the sent items folder. Can someone smarter than I advise how
to fix, thank you?
