Now in answer to your question:
SMTP is a protocol, not the server. You need the name of your ISP's smtp server.
Who is your ISP?
Have you called their tech support for this information?
Have you tried their web site for this information?

I think this is due to the poster using a web based forum, rather than a news reader. Then their reply does not show.

You need to spend some time reading some of the thousands of messages in
this newsgroup, so you can become familiar with the normal and abnormal. It
is extremely normal for replies to be posted with nothing added. Some people
consider it to be rude and some people reply as if the person is simply
repeating what was said but my theory is that there is a bug somewhere and
the person that the message is from might be totally unaware of the message.

Note that you are using that unquotable format or whatever it is called that
does not show the quote prefixes for the text being replied to.

I think your theory about forum posts not showing replies is a total guess.
Do you have any evidence at all that it happens?

MimiM, "Unknown error" is usually caused by interference from an
antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:
