self reboot, no boot user settings screen, cant defrag D:/

last night computer rebooted by itself many times. I tried to scan C and
D for errors and it rebooted several ties. Finally I got all the way
thru the error scans and it found nothing,,then I defragged C:/, but
each time I tried to defrag D:/ it rebooted or just stopped during the
defraging. Each attempt to run virus scan or spybot scan resulted in a
reboot during the scan.

Finally I cold booted and all has been fine. I then cold booted again
after 4 hours and all it fine. I then warm booted after about 2 hours
and all is fine. All fine means that it is not rebooting by itself and
everything is working as it should, except...

When I try to defrag D:/ it says defragging, but nothing happens. Also
the user settings blue screen during boot is no longer there. I noticed
that last night during the self reboots and it remains now. However as
far as I can tell all my user settings are intact.

Ideas?

More than likely hardware failure and or driver corruption but check the
event log for clues.

Try downloading and running the Memory Diagnostic tool found here
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Your problem might be related to faulty RAM.

Another issue could be related to heat. Check to ensure the fan for your CPU
heatsink and the fan for your powersupply are running. You will need to
remove the cover from the computer case to see if the CPU fan is running.
Feel the vent at the back of the case where the power supply plugs in to
ensure there is air flow coming out of the powersupply.

diag no errors

Both fans running. PS feels cool. Temp shutdown is set below the max cpu
temp and it has never triggered.

No self reboots since the cold boot, last night.

You can ignore the 'safe mode' boot errors. Look at the errors logged when
the BSOD occurred.
