selecting text with mouse

In Word and Outlook, I can't select text by clicking and dragging my mouse
over the text. The problem can't be the mouse because it works fine in online
forms like this and in Notepad. My touchpad (i'm using a notebook) has the
same problem. I can't find any help on this problem. It has to be some simple
but hidden setting that Microsoft should randomly change itself on me. Thanks

Let's eliminate the mouse by testing selection with the keyboard. Click into
a sentence and then hold down the shift key whilst you use the left or right
arrow keys. This should select text letter at a time. Does it work?
