Selecting text and typing not working... need help!

I have always been able to select text, such as a sentence, and then type a
new sentence and it would replace it. Now, if I select text and start typing,
it keeps the existing text but puts my new text in front of it. This is
happening in both Word and Outlook. I'm sure it's probably something simple
but I can't figure it out. Please help me fix it. Thanks.

Somehow you've cleared the check for Word's "Typing replaces selected text"
or "Typing replaces selection" option. In Word 2007 go to Office Button>
Word Options - Advanced - Editing Options, first checkbox. In prior versions
go to Tools> Options> Edit.
