Selecting programs for opening files

I am trying to open a Quicktime film clip (I know it is a Quicktime film but
the extension for some reason is *.unk) from a webpage. I cannot change the
extension until I download/open it, but Windows seems to allow only IE and
Windows Media to try to open it--and, of course, they can't. When I go to
File Options in Control Panel I am offered lots of other ordinary programs
to open *.unk files, e.g., Word, Excell, etc., but none seems likely to open
a Quicktime file. Of course I have Quicktime and have it running. But it
seems Windows will not allow me to link these files or even other v ideo
files such as *mpg. It's as if Quicktime does not exist on my computer. Am
I missing some really elementary step somewhere? Or is this one of those
Microsoft-versus-Apple thing ?

Well... .unk is "unknown" - it isn't a Quicktime file extension. I'd
download/save the file, save it as the right extension (one supported by
Quicktime), and see if you can launch it.

Thanks. I took "unk" to mean unknown and, of course, it's nobody's
extension. Unfortunately, I cannot change the extension until I download
the file but I cannot download it until I can persuade Windows t let
Quicktime (instead of Windows Media) to try to open it. So the question is
how I can persuade Windows to do exactly that, namely set Quicktime as the
program to open *.unk, at least temporarily. Is there a reason Quicktime
does not show up in Folder Options?

Assuming there's a link to this file, have you tried right clicking on the link
and selecting "Save Target As..."?

Right-click, or Shift/Right-click the link to the file and you may find
a Save option in the context menu.
