Seeking help to uninstall win2000 and reinstall Win98

Hi all,

I would really appreciate some help on this.

I was having some problem with my PC which was running win98. So i
decided to do a reformat and reinstall. It was a pretty straight
forward process, but after re-installing, i decided to venture ahead
and upgrade it to Win2000. after
installation the software indicated that some of the drivers are not
compatible and need to be upgraded. Actually i tot it was still ok,
coz once
i can get to the net i can dowload the drivers. but the worst thing,
after
loadinf win2000, the system cannot detect the modem. no matter how i
try (or
at least all the method i know) it just can't detect. wanted to
manually
install the driver but can't find the disk.

so i tot of re-formatting the harddisk again and re-load it with
win98,
but the procedure for re-formatting win2000 is different and i can't
use the
bootup disk for win98. tried running the boot disk(4 altogether) for
win2000 but there was an error somewhere when it's running disk 2 and
just the computer just quit the DOS bootup.

I am really lost now and i think ijust want my Win98 back. Can
anyone pls advice on how can i re-format my pc with Win2000 system
right now and re-load it with win98. Thanks a million.

Would appreciate if you can send the help replies to my email:
(e-mail address removed) as i do not come here that often.

Rgds,
Terence

IMO it's simply not worth the trouble, given that you'll more than likely
end up with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left behind
from the upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the CD-Rom or boot the Windows 2000 setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Else to wipe the drive, some ways include; boot a win98 startup disk, run
fdisk and delete all partition information found (as long as NTFS is
primary). Or boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks and when you get to
the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found, then
abort the install. Or use a utility named delpart. Once removed you can
partition and format the drive as you wish.

Your harddisk format is always NTFS. so that u can't use win98 bootdisk.
u may utilize tools - e.g. PartitionMagic7.0 - convert NTFS to FAT32.
Now, your win98 bootdisk is use.

Why not just try the Standard Modem Driver at whatever speed your modem is:
eg Standard 56K V90,, I find this works well with a wide variety of modems
available.
