Seek no-censorship and long-lasting blog site

F

Franklin

Is there a free blog site which offers free blogs and which has a
good reputation in resisting attempts to censor what its bloggers
write?

It would be even better if such a site had a reasonable likelihood of
remaining in business for the longer run rather than collapsing from
an unsustainable financial setup or whatever.

Any recommendations?

By way of explanation: I want to write a blog which gives a rather
critical account of experiences of one or two of large public health
organisations in the UK.

So the blog site could easily get asked to remove various postings
because they are too embarassing for some of the individuals
involved. I would like a site that does not lean on the blogger to
remove items or do it without the blogger's permission.

Why don't you just use a free webhosting and a flat-file based blog? This
would let you write what you want on any php-enabled hoster, and in case of
trouble you could move the entire blog and the content with ease. At the
time being there are
- Pivot
- SimplePHPBlog
These are general purposes CMS's, not just blogs:
- Limbo
- Flatnuke

At the moment I'm working on a project which will use the same "database"
of SimplePHPBlog but that will be much more customizable.
Anyway, my two cents

I have used blogger.com for over a year and have never been
censored. It is owned by Google so I doubt it will go out of
business soon. I wrote a review of it at:

George, that's a nice website, er, blog. You have spent time on it
and it shows. Well done. I am still reading my way through your
text.

Can someone use blogger.com without joining Google? And can readers
access the full blogs without any of them haveing to join Google.

I ask this because I was reading a blog on Xansa and found that I had
to join Xansa to get to see all the blog and to be able follow up
certain links there.

I like the part where you say I could move my blog.

I once nearly got caught out by an ISP who was closing various
user accounts and I nearly lost my email address and emails not
downloaded from their server.

Don't feel like almost being held hostage again.

But for now I need to follow a simpler 'KISS' path as I'm a blog
virgin and have read no more than four or five blogs in total.

Franklin,

All you have to do to set up is follow the 3 steps on the following
page to set up a blogger.com account. It is pretty easy. I'm pretty
sure you don't have to join google.

http://www.blogger.com/start

You don't have to do any html coding. It is all set up with the
template. If you are good at coding, you can change the template.

NoWhereMan had a interesting idea although I have found most free
webhosting site don't seem to stay in business very long. I'm still
trying to find a good site to host my video files.

Highly recommended: www.WordPress.com
or as another poster recommended hosting your own blog program,
than use Wordpress from www.wordpress.org.

Very large support community via their forum. Large template
directory. Free of course! Easy to set up.

You have lost me already! Heh. I told you I am new to this.

You mention hosting one's own blog program and then compare it to
Wordpress as if that is what Wordpress is. So are you saying this?

.... WordPress is a blog program,
.... there are also several alternatives to WordPress.

But what is the purpose of a blog program anyway.

hey, I can see I need to be pointed to a FAQ on blogs for newbies.

Franklin, WordPress is basically a program that creates the necessary
html code for a blog. It is freeware but if you use it, you would need
web space on the internet where you post your files. Blogger.com gives
you the free web space and generates the html code automatically for
you. All a blog is is a web site that has a series of dated postings
like you would make in diary. If you need to understad it better, just
go to my blog and click on next blog (top right of the page) to have a
look at other blogs.

OK I'm with you now.

You can't shake off a razor-sharp mind like mine. Memory like a,
um, you know, what's it, one of those, er, um, ahhh, it's coming
to me, er, hold on, um, er, yes, almost, um, gone, ..... well I'll
tell you later when I remember. OK, Got it. Memory like a tree.
Um, now I must check out my razor-sharp mind isn't getting too
blunt.

Seriously, I didn't realise there was a hobbyist strand which used
application tools to format their own blank webspace into a blog.
I suppose it makes sense.

In fact using something like Wordpress might be an advantage to me
in case I fell foul of my ISP or foul of a blog site (like
blogger.com) because of the highly vituperative content.

Do you know if I can use WordPress with some free web space? I
already get some web space from my ISP but I don't want the
discussed party to come and examine the innocent remainder of my
web site.

I would presume WordPress could be used with some free web space though
I have never tried it. The trick is finding reliable free web space.
