Hi Freudi,

One of the early alerts from MS recommended stopping the verclsid
service or rebooting after applying the registry fix.

KB918165 still does, but has yet to be updated to inform people using
older nVidia drivers that they may affected by this patch to, as is
mentioned in the latest MSRC blog.

MS couldn't have tried to have a worse response to this fiasco!

That's what I'm doing too, although in most cases it looks to
not be neccessary though.

I still don't see the point having at least three versions of
the same registry fix for the HP Share-To-Web - KB908531 problem.

No, I don't need more traffic on my site, but I'm wondering for
the reason behind publishing different flavours which "may"
irritate users and raise the question, which version is the best
one too choose and if any of those are trustable than the others.

I see your point--while those of us that know the work of you, Kelly, and
Ramesh will simply grab whichever fix is most convenient because we are
aware they are basically the same and all of them work, the casual user has
no idea and could become confused easily.

I have been posting Kelly's fix because she is well known and trusted in the
XP groups and because I didn't have the link to your script handy.

PS-- thanks for your prompt response to the problem. Any trusted source to
automate registry fixes is always appreciated.

I suppose one of the reasons could be that some people when having a
problem with WU will only go to the WU NG to find a solution whereas
others will only subscribe to General and ask the question here and then
will only see the one fix posted.
That's my understanding, but as I subscribe to both ng's of course saw
both fixes hence my question, hope it didn't cause any upsets.

Maybe, but at least some them read and post in both newsgroups.

Nothing to worry about Joan, I'm just wondering.

What is most worrying is that a simple, regular update from M$ has
messed up drivers from HP and god knows other companies. Does this not
say something about the ethics of M$ for interfering in somebody's work
just because those drivers were designed to run on M$'s operating
system. Is M$ trying to enter this market as well and destroy HP and
NVidia. We shall never know unless HP & Nvidia has something to say
about this!!!

Well, KB908531 is indeed *not* a simple, regular update.
OTOH, updating the software in trouble after KB908531 is installed
magically fixes the quirks on most systems too. That's true at least
for HP Share-To-Web and Nvidia video card drivers.

Nope, it may say something about the test systems at MS and
quality control of patches in general.

Conspiracy theories don't help anyway.

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for the explanation, it was just an observation on my part with
regards the two patches seen, but as I said I have no problems so didn't
need either one.

I just skim through some of the ng's I look at until I see something that
takes my eye then I'll follow it.

If I find where I can download more time I'll be sure to let you know, I
could do with some myself <g> and glad to see you back here, you've been
missed.
