Security Tab Missing

Ian W

Unusual problem - on our Windows 2000 SBS, the Security
tab has disappeared (when we right-click the folder and
select Properties) on every folder on the server. I'm
guessing a Registry entry must have gone missing or been
corrupted.

Anyone any idea what entry controls this and how we put
it back?

Hope you can help.

i think you did not logged in with the Administrator account
or as a member of the Administrators account
and you have no access to read the security persmissions

Nope - logged on as Administrator!! No Group Policy
settings implemented either so not that! Just the tabs

I have to ask, are you sure the file system isn't fat?

The server is a 2U rack mount dually Athlon with 5 x 36GB
10000rpm SCSI drives on a dual channel Adaptec
controller. The C:\ is on a mirror pair (RAID-1)
implemented in software and formatted using Windows 2000
NTFS defaults. The D:\ is a 3-disk RAID-5 array again
implemented in software and formatted using Windows NTFS
defaults. Both confirm 'File Type: NTFS' in Disk Manager.

Accessing the explicit shares on the server from the
Computer Management snap-in gives me access to the
security tab but only for those folders explicitly
shared. From an Explorer view or My Computer view there
are no security tabs so I cannot alter security settings
on, for example, an individual user's folder.

These things used to work dammit! (Last time I used them
was several months ago - no need to change anything
since). Only things changed on server have been patches
added via Windows update.

Explorer|Tools|Folder Option|View and uncheck the box for "Use simple file
sharing"

Thanks for the thought but this only applies to XP Pro on
the desktop, I think. This option is not available in
Windows 2000 Server.
