security groups over WAN

We're running 2ksp4. Several users who access the network
over the WAN are having a strange issue. If they belong to
any security groups, it takes 30 minutes for the local
profile to load and the mapped drives are not present. If
we remove them from the groups, they logon fine and the
logon scripts work. If we logon with their account in the
LAN, it works fine. Thanks for any help you may
have..............

Where is a Global Catalog server in relation to the LogonServer that
authenticates them.
