Security Enabled Wireless Network - Unable to Connect with Key

I have windows xp home edition and I'm attempting to connect to a security
enabled network for which I have the key. As Microsoft's help centre
suggested I have configured it as a shared network. Now, instead of giving me
the error message "Windows is unable to connect to the selected wireless
network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of
available wireless networks, and try to connect again" it tries to connect
and then simply defaults to an unsecured network. I run vista on my laptop
and it connects no problem, so I know it's not the network. The problem has
got to be with the OS. Please help!

Hi
When you look at the available Networks, does it appears on the list?
Might be that the Laptop's card is sensitive enough to receive the network
and the other is Not.
What type of computer, where is the Antenna?

Hi Jack,

It does indeed show up on the list... The type of computer is a custom
assembled desktop running a pentium 3 (2.4 ghz) processor and 1.25 gigs of
ram. I am using a d-link extreme G adaptor plugged in through a usb port in
the back of the computer.
