Security Descriptor error - why is this happening to me? :'-(

Hi,

I ran Norton Disk Doctor on my hard drive, and it found a problem with
my "security descriptors:"

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Norton Disk Doctor found problems with the file system.
Run Norton Disk Doctor and check the Fix Errors option.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Disk Doctor tells me that "The 'Fix errors' checkbox was not checked."
I don't see a check box anywhere to check for fixing errors.
I suspect it doesn't exist for the Win 2k version.

Chkdsk doesn't fix the problem either.

Any ideas as to what I should do next?

You can run chkdsk with the /f and /r switchs to make sure that there isnt a
problem, if that comes back clean then I would say that youre fine.

Well, it came back clean, but DiskDoctor still tells me there is a problem.

Does anyone know of a GOOD disk checking utility for NTFS partitions?
... something I can use instead of Norton DiskDoctor?

Well again, chkdsk.....its actually very good. I would wonder what Norton
is finding, have you tried calling them?

It's my understanding that I have to pay for phone support,
and I have a feeling that the problem is in their software (with DD)
- and I'm not giving them a plug-nickel to help them fix their problem.

I went all over their website, and I couldn't find an email address
for tech support, and the address that I have didn't work - the message
got returned as undeliverable. I see LOTS of stuff for corporate clients,
but not much for us little guys - if I'm too small to be bothered with,
then I think I'll start looking around for alternatives - I'm pretty
much dissatisfied with Symantec - I've had problems with their stuff
in the past.

THIS is part of the reason why I'm asking for recommendations for
alternatives - I'm about ready to chunk Symantec altogether and
use other stuff - so long as I can find plenty of other stuff
to substitute, to cover all the bases.

Besides a disk checking utility, I need something to evaluate
and fix any problems with the operating system (something like WinDoctor).

Well like I said, chkdsk is typically very good at what it does, if it says
you are clean then I would imagine you are fine. I will leave it to the
rest of the group to determine what other products might do what you need.
