Just upgaded to xp sp2 and the Security Center Service does not start
automatically. When I start in manually and get to the firewall screen, the
firewal radio buttons are grayed out. Has anyone had this problem? If so is
there a fix? Thanks

Couple of questions and then some comments:

1) Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home?
2) If it's Professional, are you the system (or network) administrator?

Since you installed the update yourself, I'm going to assume you have
legitimate administrative control over your machine. This still does not
distinguish between the Professional version or the home version, however.
If it's the professional version, there's a good possibility that your system
(or network) administrator has configured group policy options within the
domain somewhere to have those selections pre-selected for you and therefore,
prevents you from making changes.

Since you're the one installing SP2, this tactic would be somewhat
troubling, but not unheard of.

In the case of Home Edition, make sure that you are logged in as an account
with administrator level privileges. I'd also take a look at any spyware and
ad-ware detection and removal strategies.

Hope that helps.

I meant to add to my previous comments, you may wish to check that the
"Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing" service is started. To do
this:

Click Start --> Run
Type in "services.msc" and hit the enter key.
Scroll through the list, until you find the "Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing" service

If it's started, click "Restart" from the Action menu to give it a quick
jumpstart.
If it's stopped click "Start" from the Action menu

Did leave that little bit out,, its Pro. I don't recall setting any group
policy options but is there a way to check them? Thanks

Unless you're the administrator, it's a little sticky to check them out.
Depends largely on your proficiency with GPOs. If you got it, then pop open
the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) and output a report on the
"Resultant Set of Group Policies" (RSOP).

More information can get gathered quickly here:

If you enter the following command in a DOS prompt, what is the response:

netsh firewall show state

I started both the firewall service and the security center service. Its
stays on for about one minute and then the security ceter closes and brings
down the firewall. Ever hear of this???
