Securing Data on portable hard drive

I move data around a mixed XP Pro and Home environment on a portable
firewire drive. I need to secure the data on the drive in case it gets lost
or stolen. What is the best way to do this so it is accessible to all
machines without purchasing additional s/ware if possible? Are folder
permissions the way to go as I believe encryption will make the data
unreadable to the XP home machines.

Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is to encrypt the files
before storing them on the portable drive. Then of course
after you copy them to the target machine you need to
reverse the process.....
There are free file encryption tools available on the
internet such as kgb etc.... try to google for "kgb
encryption", it's a pretty good one.

Thanks but there are around 20Gb of files and a file encryption utility
would take ages unless its to an encrypted volume. I know drivecrypt can do
this and has a traveller mode but I don't want to buy around 15 licenses to
write data from all machines.
