Second IDE HDD is not recognised

P

Peter Cairns

I have a P2 PC with 512MB of RAM. I have recently
obtained a Maxtor 80GB HDD, and have been attempting to
install this as a slave to my existing IDE HDD. All

jumper settings are as recommended by the literature, and
the system is currently stable. The Maxtor HDD is visible
when using the Device Manager, and is

also picked up by my Nero System Analysis as follows:

Attached Devices
Description : Master: ST340824A
Type : Disk Drive
DMA : On
Description : Slave: Maxtor 6Y080L0
Type : Disk Drive
DMA : On

The problem is that Windows XP does not allow me to
access this Maxtor HDD (it is not allocated a drive
letter, nor is it present under "Other"). The Maxtor

HDD is not visible when looking at "My Computer".
Also, when running Norton Utilities and reviewing the
System Information, this application does not see the
Maxtor HDD.

How do I get Windows XP to recognise and install and
allocate a drive letter to the Maxtor HDD?

Did you partition and format it?

Thanks for the advice. It's been some time since I've got
to grips with reformatting and partitioning a HDD, and
this will be the first time doing a second HDD on the
same system.

I assume it's simply a case of booting from the WinXP CD-
ROM, and following the instructions for formatting and
partitioning of the second HDD? Will it be self-evident
that it's the new 80GB disk I want to format, and not my
existing C drive? (i.e. I don't want to find myself well
& truly stuffed!)

I had assumed (wrongly) that to reformat and partion a
new disk, a drive letter needed to be allocated first.

Cheers

It is easiest to partition and format a slave drive from within Windows XP.
Right click on "My Computer". Go to manage/disk management. Right click on
empty space in the drive and see the options!

Thanks for your help and advice.

For others future reference, I was able to accomplish
partioning and formatting as follows: From the Windows XP
start menu I right clicked on "My Computer", scrolled
down to "manage", then selected "storage", then "disk
management".

Once the system had identified all healthy and
unallocated storage, I was then able to right click on
the unformatted slave disk, partion and and format it.

Much easier than trying it from the XP CD!
