Second hard drive hung in PIO mode

Running Windows XPSP1, installed a second hard drive, WD
200 GB. For two months worked good, now it is running in
the PIO mode instead of the Ultra DMA mode 5, which is
what my primary hard drive is using. All video I play
from this drive is jerky video and distorted sound. Per
this knowledge base article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;303013 I went through all the steps I had previously
gone through prior to installing hard drive and in the
Atapi.sys search only one file was found. This was Atapi
file in C:\1386 folder: description - IDE/ATAPI Port
Drive M/S Ver.-5.1.2600.1133(XPSP2.020921-0842). In my
search prior to installing 2nd H/D,I found 2 files,the
one just listed and this file in C:\Windows\System 32
\drivers - description: File Version 5.1.2600.1106
(XPSP1.020828-1920).I believe there is something wrong
with this file because it did not show up in the search
and I went to this folder and file is still listed. It is
required for the 48-bit LBA support needed to run a hard
drive larger than 137 GB.How do I activate this file?
Thanks, Foz

I had the same problem...second HD was only in PIO mode
after upgrading a few times the drivers for it. I could
not get back the DMA mode even after trying to restore to
older drivers...ended up restoring XP and now it's OK
again. In the future I'm careful with IDE and chipset
driver updates.
