Searching by categories

I've organised my media contacts into different categories. Now I want to
bring up all the contacts which I've categorised as eg. "online"

If I put in the FIND box the word "online", it'll pick up all the contacts
which have the word "online" in it, but not necessarily just the ones I've
added "online" to in the categories section.

How do I do a FIND/SEARCH which only looks at the categories box?

P.S I know how to SORT all my contacts by categories, by selecting the View
- by Category option, but this just opens up my entire contacts lists
separated by category names. that's not what I want.

Hope someone can help me!

Clarify what you need to do that View By Category doesn't do. That's the

way one uses Categories.

You can't search the way you want. The solution you may like is to create a
filtered view which shows the one category only. You can make many of these
filtered views. Want to know exactly how to do it? Then tell us your version
as it varies.

I'm using Outlook 2003.
Basically all my contacts are in one place, but differentiated by
categories. If I click on my contacts and am viewing all my contacts as
detailed address cards, I then want to be able to pick out (bring up on the
screen) only the contacts with "online" in the categories section - but still
viewed in in the current screen (ie. detailed address cards - just like if
you'd done a standard Find) so I can check my notes, select the relevant
contacts and use the Action - New Mail to Contact function to send an email
to everyone I've selected within the contacts with "online" in the category.

P.S I can search by category using the "Adviced find" option, by clicking on
"More choices" and writing the category name in the Categories box, and
clicking "Find Now". Then it will bring up the correct selection in a list
form below, but in the new window.
I'm unable to access the Actions - Mail New Contact function from here as
it's in a new window. That's my main issue. I want to be able to work within
the new selection.

I'm using Outlook 2003.
Basically all my contacts are in one place, but differentiated by
categories. If I click on my contacts and am viewing all my contacts as
detailed address cards, I then want to be able to pick out (bring up on
the
screen) only the contacts with "online" in the categories section - but
still
viewed in in the current screen (ie. detailed address cards - just like if
you'd done a standard Find)

Then you need to apply a filter, as Judy points out. View>Arrange
By>Current View>Customize Current View>Filter. You can also make new views
instead of changing the existing view so they appear on the Views drop-down
of the Advanced toolbar or on the Views>Arrange By>Current View menu.
