Search won't open

When I try to search for a file, I get;
"Error" "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found.
You may need to run setup"

I have one other problem, ...see post on MMC won't open.
Don't know if they are related.

What does it mean when it says that I might need to run Set Up?

Start>Run>%SystemRoot%\Inf>ok

Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll
need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder.Remember Windows\Inf
folder is a hidden folder,so enable Windows Explorer options to show
hidden files and folders before proceeding.

Reinstalling the Search companion

1. Login as administrator
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.

This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses. When you're prompted
for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD, or point to
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder (if you've applied SP1 or SP2
separately) which-ever has the updated system files.

I found that earlier, after posting this, tried it and it did not fix the
problem. Maybe I need to try it again. It seemed to go ok, but after
rebooting, I still have the same error message.

Ramesh,
I've tried your suggestion, as well as all of the bulletins. Still have the
same problem. Only thing I haven't done in the bulletins (because I don't
understand what they are saying) ...is checking the files i.e. balloon.***

Not sure what to do. Have spent hours now trying to resolve this issue, AND
my other issue mentioned in another post (Microsoft Management Console won't
open....MMC does not work)

Click Start, Run and type this:

SFC /SCANNOW

Insert your Windows XP CD into the drive.
