Search window is blank in Windows XP SP2

When I click on Start/Search, the window that opens is blank. Nothing comes
up. Also, when I try to run Windows update, IE opens and tells me it cannot
find the page. My son has some sort of pokers games on the computer that he
downloaded from the Internet. One is called Party Poker. These pokers games
are listed in IE when you click on Tools.

I have tired the following:

repair of IE
uninstall and then reinstall of IE
ran SFC and let that repair and restore files

So far the problem remains. Anyone have a suggestion I can try? I run IE6
and XP Pro with all the latest updates.

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

Reinstalling the Search companion

1. Login as administrator
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.

This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses. When you're prompted
for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD, or point to
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder (if you've applied SP2 separately)
which-ever location has the updated system files.
