Search returns a list of deleted files

When I perform a search for a text string in a directory (and all it's files
and sub-directories), it returns a list of files that were deleted fom the C:
drive weeks ago. Not only that the sub-directory that the files were in was
also deleted weeks ago.
Any ideas on how to get around this? I have wasted hours on this.

Hi, Elaine.

Weeks ago? Usually we suggest that users with this problem just wait for a
while, but "weeks ago" should be more than long enough.

As you probably know, the Indexing service works only in the background,
stepping out of our way when we are actively working on the computer. With
a heavily-used machine, the service might not be getting enough free time to
do its job, especially if the computer is turned off promptly at the end of
the workday. Leaving it "idling" overnight should give it enough time for
indexing to catch up with real life. Choosing to Rebuild Index just before
leaving for the day could encourage it to get the job done sooner, but be
prepared for a long rebuilding process if you have a big drive(s) with lots
of files.

I'm not sure what else to suggest. I've been beta-testing Vista's Service
Pack 1, which should be available to everybody next month. I'm not sure
what Indexing changes were made below the surface, but the User Interface
has been improved and its performance seems to be better, too.
