Search internet for drivers

I just got done wiping and restoring XP Pro-SP2 on a Dell Dimension 8400
for the second time around.
The machine has a sound card and a Pinnacle card that did not come with it.
They show up as Unknown Devices.
Yesterday when I did this, I right clicked the devices, clicked update
driver, and Yes, allow to connect to the internet. It worked and found all
the drivers just fine.
TODAY, I made the mistake of not having the LAN drivers installed, and it
plugged away awhile and gave up.
Now I have got the internet connection going again, but when I try to
update the drivers over the internet in device manager, it won't search the
internet anymore. It just immediately pops up "Can't install This
Hardware" because it can't locate the drivers.
How do I tell it that I have fixed the internet connection so it will try
again?

First of all, never ever get the drivers from Windows Updates, get them from
the manufacturer of the Hardware website by going to the Hardware
Manufacturer website and search for the drivers by Serial number or by brand
name.
Does the Internet connection work other than this, i.i surfing okay and
browsing websites?.
For the Pinnicle's card go here

Also try to visit the Motherboard manufacturer website, download the Mobo
drivers and install them.

Hi Menno,

In addition to nass: Try to reset the settings here:

Right click My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Windows Update

Thanks, Kelly.
Unfortunately, that is already set to ask every time.
And it DOES (ask). Problem is that it just doesn't seem to search because
the "Unable to Install Hardware" notice comes up almost immediately saying
it can't locate drivers,
The first time around, it found them all.
Needless to say, I've scrounged them all up by other means now by taking
cards out, getting numbers, etc.

Most welcome, Menno.

What you really need to do is get all of your drivers via the manufactures,
expand them in either a Cabs folder or Drivers folder directly under C -
then run the setup's manually. From there save the folder(s) onto a pen
drive or burn them for future use.

More often than not just expanding the files, Add New Hardware and/or Device
Manager update driver will find those files for you under C.

Good luck!
