After opening the search function in Windows Explorer,
the search does not return anything, including known
files.

There are bugs in the search function. With the exception
of looking ofr text within files, I"ve found that telling it
to search My Computer usually finds those files where
searching C: or a folder doesn't, for some reason. A pain,
but it seems to work for me.
A couple MVP's have posted fixes, but I've never had them
completely fix things.

If you do not list hidden files Search will not find
them eventhough they are on your harddrive. Open
Explorer/tools/folders options/View tab/tick "Show Hidden
Files"/Apply/OK
