Search has stopped working

Sometime in last few months, search has stopped working.

From Windows Explorer, right click a folder, and select search. Enter (for
example) a partial file name and click search. Immediately a window labeled
"Search Companion" appears with the message: "Unexpected Error / Action could
not be completed"

System is WinXP, SP2 and I believe up-to-date with patches.

I looked for anything on this problem, but didn't see anything. I posted in
this discussion group because search is a basic function. Would this post be
better elsewhere?
