Search Hang

I am running XP SP2 with all critical updates installed. After installing
updates a few weeks back, I noticed that when I try to run Search
(Start-search) or Windows explorer, after I type in the file search criteria
and click the "search" button" the app freezes and the poor dog stops moving.
When I click the red x to close the dialogue box, I get a message "program
not responding."

I have also tried accessingthe search function through Windows Explorer but
I still get the same result.

I have done a system restore to a point in time prior to installing the
windows updates but the Windows search finction still hangs.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your reply. I read that post before posting my question. The
site your refrred me to appears to address the search problem as it relates
to Internet explorer searches (i.e., "problem is that system does not access
http://www.sa.windows").

My problem is not with Internet Explorer but rather Windows explorer. I can
not serach for files on my local computer

The "Search companion" is brain dead.
Many of us have downloaded the program
"agent ransack". It's about 50 times faster
than XP's tool.

Hello - How do you customize the search so that it
does NOT search inside ZIP archives?

Thank you for your reply.
I did review that entire string of troubleshooting tips. They did not
address the search freeze/hang issue but rather spoke to the issue of
tweaking the search function. If you know of a specific fix, I sure would
appreiate it if you could direct me to it, else I will most likely follow the
oher posted suggestion to download agent ransack

Thank you. Would you be kind enough to point me to the download site? Are
there any set-up/config/compatablity issues I should know about?

I am having the same problem as Albert. I tried reloading Windows and
interestingly, it worked again, BUT ... sometime after I went back through
the process of reloading all the Windows updates, noticed it again had quit
working. Same symtom (becomes unresponsive after hitting the search button).
Sytem restore provided no resolution. Tried the Kelly's Korner thing to no
avail. I'm stumped. I would rather fix XP to work like it's supposed to,
but would fall back on this Agent Ransack if need be.
