search engines don't work

The search engines in web sites ie: Yahoo don't work they
return a "the page cannot be displayed" check your
network connection. I have tried every possible settings
included all the default setting but nothing works. I
have removed and reinstalled IE6 to no avail. I am
thinking it could be a network problem, i have removed
the firewall but that did nothing. Any idea? I have
windows xp home edition and IE6 with all the updates. No
virus has been detected and adaware 6 didn't find
anything either.

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back

I'm having a similar problem, but I can't even get IE to
start. I updated windows and IE. It must be something
with Ie6 AND Xp.

IE 6.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

and:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

More: This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

thank you very much, the page auhma.org did help a lot
although the information given seems to have been
slightly out of date ie: when I deleted the file
Wsem210.dll it became wsem216.dll and wsem217.dll. The
spyware (my son's) computer was afflicted with had become
obviously sneakier. But I was able with the clues given
to find, track and delete in the registry the offending
culprits. May be I should have downloaded spybot first
and it may have been able to do the job much more easily.
I know now that you are right, adaware and spybot don't
find the same things! Thanks again.
