Search Engine

Any ideas on how I change the default MSN to a different search engine?

I know I could just install a toolbar like Google or something but I but
don't really trust them, I'd rather just have the one default that's there
as and when I click on the search button.

IE6

Thx

It would be nice to find out about how to do this. I still miss the ability
to select from a list of search engines, which was strangely taken from IE
users some time ago. Somewhere there's code that does this, he typed
hopefully, but just stubbed out.

Apologies for the delay in sending this query.

I am not the OP, but I put this to one side and thought - I'll look at that one day. Well, the day arrived and I now have a
question.

Customize gives me only a couple of options
When Use Search Assistant is selected
Find a Web page
ninemsn.search

Choose a search provider for address bar searches:
MSN

When Use one search service is selected
Find a Web page
ninemsn.search
Looksmart (I have no idea what this is)

Choose a search provider for address bar searches:
MSN

I have no idea what the difference is between "Use Search Assistant" and "Use one search service".

The query is:
Is there any way I can change the settings so that Google is used when I type something in the address bar?

Do a Ctrl + F (Find) for Search Engine - Change to Google

or just scroll down.

Thanks, Wes
Yes, I read that and tried it earlier, and it didn't work - hence my query.

So I tried it again.

The file Google.reg executed.
I closed IE6 and re-opened it.

I typed "tandcl" in the address bar and clicked on
Search for "tandcl"
This came up:
http://search.ninemsn.com.au/results.aspx?srch=105&FORM=AS5&q=tandcl

That is, it still used ninemsn

My site was on top, so that's one plus. I fact all but about 2 or 3 contained a reference to my site. (One was eBay which annoys, as
I don't use it, but that's another story.)

Anyway, do I have to restart the PC to get this setting ?

If there's nothing I can do, well, that's life. It's not vitally inportant.

Hi Trevor,

I never heard of or noticed ninemsn until your last post.

I see that it's http://ninemsn.com.au/ and no us version, I checked.

[[Formed in 1997, ninemsn is a 50:50 joint venture between the Microsoft
Corporation and Australia's leading media company, Publishing and
Broadcasting Limited (PBL).]]

That explains that.

I have Internet Explorer ver. 6.0

I have Search from the Address bar turned off.

I have a folder in my Favorites named 0 Google. It's the second folder.
When I Search using Internet Explorer I just click Favorites, point to 0
Google and click on Google Advanced Search.

Google Advanced Search
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

I have a bunch of other Search items in 0 Google as well. Google Groups
Advanced Search, Microsoft Security Bulletin Search, MSDN Home Page,
Microsoft TechNet Home, Windows 2000 Registry Reference, etc.

BTW, the first folder in Favorites is 0 Kelly. Kelly's sites and Ramesh's.

I do not even have the Search icon on my IE Toolbar. It defaults to MSN
Search, which I use once in a blue moon.

I do have a Search MSKB icon on my toolbar that I use all of time.

Leads to...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;EN-US;KBHOWTO

BTW, Searching with MSN for: tandcl you came in second.

Yes, I should have said so. We have a few Australian versions of various international sites.

PBL runs the Nine network. They originally broadcast on Channel 9 VHF in all Australian capital cities - also 9 in many regional
cities as well. Australian TV has used UHF for many years now, but 9 still keep the same network name. Hence the nine in ninemsn.

The company that runs Channel 7 (same story re VHF/UHF channels) now uses the website address yahoo7.com.au !!
I have Internet Explorer ver. 6.0
Yes, same here
I have Search from the Address bar turned off.
This sounds like my best option.

My search icon defaults to Google, which is easier than going to Favorites (although I have several search engines there as well)
Ask Jeeves
Google Search
MSN Search
sensis.com.au (owned by Telstra , the major - once the only - telecom company)
Yahoo! Australia & NZ

I have a subfolder for MS sites as well. Kelly's and Ramesh's are in it
I do have a Search MSKB icon on my toolbar that I use all of time.

Yes, I should add a few more to my MS folder
BTW, Searching with MSN for: tandcl you came in second.

It's back to #1 now
#2 is www.designpm.com/Clients/TandCL/TandCL_ID_01.htm

Look like someone else pinched my idea of TandCL.
Trevor begins in T, my wife's name is Carole which starts in C - hence TandCL

As I said, it's no drama if I can't set the search to Google. I may just remove it as you have

I stay away from Ask Jeeves or ask.com now. I don't remember why. Maybe
I'll have Ask Jeeves. ;-)

I figured out the TandCL after visiting your site.

I especially got a kick out of...
Carole Now has to put up with Trevor around the house during the week.

When my Dad retired, you should have heard my Mom... Well, you've heard
Carole. I imagine that some of the same things were said. LOL
