Search Does Not Find All Files

D

David E. Ross

I used TweakUI to set "Use classic search in Explorer". However, I have
the same problem with the standard search.

I left-click on a folder to select it. Then I right-click to get the
pull-down context menu. I select Search.

In the Search Results window (not having received any results yet), I
enter *.html for "Search for files or folders named". I enter src= for
"Containing text". "Look in" shows the folder I originally selected.

Under Search Options, "Date", "Type", and "Size" are NOT checked.
"Advanced Options" is checked. Under "Advanced Options", only "Search
Subfolders" is checked.

I select the Search Now button.

The results show only two files. I know I have over 200 HTML files in
this folder that contain at least two instances of the text src= in each
such file. I get similar incomplete results searching for other text
strings in these files.

David,

The HTML filter ignores comments and other source entries/tags in a HTM file when searching. To resolve the problem, you may use a plain-text search filter rather than default HTML search filter.

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT.EXE
Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html\PersistentHandler

Backup the key by exporting it to a REG file

Double-click (Default) and set its Value Data to {5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

Close Registry Editor.

Repeat the same for the following branch if you want:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\PersistentHandler

Did it. It did not help.

Search does find some of the files (maybe 4). It just doesn't find all
of them (200-300).

Works fine here (having 200+ htm files in a folder). See if rebooting once helps.

If not, you may use third-party search tool such as "Agent Ransack"

Thanks. Rebooting was the key.

I've exported the updated registry keys for HTM and HTML
PersistentHandler, merged the files into one, and archived it.
