seagate st380021a problem, where to get one

Hi,

Where can I find an EXACTLY matching drive - I need the EXACTLY same
interface card, please read below - to my:
Seagate Barracuda ATA IV
Model ST380021A
Serial Number: 3HV2HKD6
P/N: 9T6006-003
HDA P/N: 100165525
Configuration Code: SVO-03
Firmware: 3.19
Date Code: 03114
Site Code: AMK

Because of a short-circuit within the power supply my Seagate Barracuda ATA
IV ST380021A harddisk got damaged. That is, as soon as I attach the power
plug to the drive, I cannot switch on the pc. There must be some
short-circuit on the interface card of the drive which the power supply
detects. So I tried to take the interface of another ST380021A and mounted
it onto the damaged drive. Now as one can hear, the disk starts spinning and
the heads move around as well, but the drive is not detected by bios. This
probably be because it is not an exactly matching interface card, there even
are different components soldered onto the card. At least this makes be
believe there gladly nothing is damaged within the drive, the problem is
just the interface card.
If you have a drive (maybe with damaged sectors on it, because I don't
bother about that), or you just know where to get a spare matching interface
card, I would be glad to hear from you.

Thanks in advance,
Rainer

The problem is not the 'interface card' on the hard disk drive.

If a Hard Drive is working, then it can be plugged into ANY IDE interface
and just about EVERY BIOS will identify the drive.

I believe that your problem lies not with the drive but in the IDE interface
path. Check that you have:
a good cable
a good connection to the Hard drive and the Mobo Connector

Try swapping drive to second IDE connector on the Mobo.

If none of this works, I would consider that you have damaged the Mobo.
Before buying a replacement, connect your 'known good drive' to another PC.
If it is recognised there then you can be sure that the Mobo in your PC has
been damaged.

Hi,

Have you tried to connect the Hdd to other PC?
Are you sure the IDE cable is working properly?
Are you sure the IDE controller on the mobo is working normally?

well, the 'known good drive' works in the other pc, and it even works in the
'electrically shocked' pc where I replaced the power supply. Additionally,
the 'known damaged drive' causes sort of short-circuit in the new pc because
the power supply there also does not switch on as soon as I plug in the
damaged drive. But when I mount the 'good' interface card onto the damaged
disk, it starts spinning and clicking like the known good drive does when
applying power to it. The drive just is not detected by any software.
Moreover the old pc works perfectly again with the new power supply, even
and old Quantum disk is fine. Just the power supply and the newer disk with
all the important data on it rendered inoperable, following murphys law -
the worst thing possible will happen...
So the idea is to find an exactly matching drive to change the electronic
components mounted to the outside of the drive. Probably this is not
possible without special access to seagate, at least the normal support
hotline did not answer at all...
thanks for your help,
Rainer

You might try calling Seagate again. I've gotten extremely
knowledgeable and helpful support from them in the past.
