Anybody know why a 40 GB seagate hard drive partitioned at 3gb primary C:,
37gb logical D: reports OK when checking properties in windows explorer,
but reports -31GB free space when trying to assign a 500MB permanent swap
file to drive D:

Running win98se. ECS K7SOM+ SiS740/961 Atx Mobo. 512MBram.

Should I be concerned? Tried fdisk /mbr. Tried checking and resizing with
patition magic 8. Still no change.

Many antethanks.

If you are *sure* the drive is empty...try re-formating it...

btw: as long as you have partition magic i;d make your C: drive larger
andf assign no more than 32 gigs to the D: drive
due to large cluster size Fat32 is pretty bad over 32gigs

Yes, its empty. Its a fresh install of win98. I'll give it a try.

Oh, perhaps that is part of the problem too, then. Thanks for the hint.
Much appreciated. I couldn't find anything about "negative drive space" in
any searches. :D

Best regards. Thanks again.

for more research you could do a google search on fat32 cluster size

but as far as the free space not showing the whole drive...
the only thing i can think of would be if the formatting of that partition
had not been completed

Thanks for the clue Philo. I ended up doing as you suggested and
as well splitting the D: drive into two smaller partitions and it fixed
everything right up. I just wanted to say thanks again.

So, Thanks again. :D
