scxadd32.xll always opens when launching Excel

When launching Excel 2003 - whether by opening an *.xls spreadsheet file, or
by opening the app itself - my customer is getting first an error, then Excel
opens scxadd32.xll in a spreadsheet. The error that comes up first says:
"The file is not in a recognizable format. If you know the file is from
another program which is incompatible with Excel, click Cancel, then open the
file in its original application. If you suspect that the file is dmamaged,
click Help. If you still want to see what text is contained in the file,
click OK." Clicking OK does open the selected spreadsheet, but also opens
behind it the file scxadd32.xll in a read only instance of Excel.

Well, on another pc, we have no problem with neither Excel, nor any of the
files we tried from the 1st pc. We did try opening some of the same files
from the 2nd pc, with no problems or errors at all. We did trying clicking
Help; the Help window opens but never populates, it remains an empty window
with only a title bar showing what is opening.

We also tried the Detect & Repair feature but gave us nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

This looks like an add-in providing it's functionality through C++ xll's. It
will be either under the Tools>Add-ins tab, or you will need to think a
little deeper as to what has been installed and may be integrating with xl.

For the add-ins try unchecking them all and see if it goes away than add
back one at a time and see when the issue comes back (Re-start xl between
re-checking)

Based on the file name, this is a ShowCase Query addin, which I use ShowCase
Query quite extensively for pulling data from our main DB system and taking
over to Excel to manipulate further that SQL won't handle too easily.

Is this by chance a ShowCase Query Add-in file? We have ran into the same
issue and to resolve this issue, we had to modify the system enviornment
variables to allow the add-in to open properly. Provided your company has
tech support with SPSS, you should be able to call their support help line
and get this resolved.

What version of ShowCase Query and ShowCase Report Writer are you using? We
ran into this issue using 7.0. Also, SPSS will require you to be up to the
latest patch level, which for 7.0, it is the 330 level, which the 340 level
will be out about the end of this month.

Thanks to both respondents! Yes, there was an Excel add-in selected - some
type of SQL add-in. I don't know for sure if the user uses/requires it, but
after clearing its selection & then rechecking it, Excel is now working fine.

Yes, we do use Showcase; I'm not sure if this user is a Showcase user or
not, but she may very well be.

At any rate, the 1st response seems to have solved the problem, and I thank
you both for your promptness and accuracy!

Check to see if the system has 2 different versions of ShowCase Strategy on
it. If it does, then it would most likely be causing problems cause the
older version is stored until the ShowCase Strategy program bin folder while
the new version is stored under the ShowCase Suite 7.x program bin folder.
This information came directly from the tech rep who I had talked with a
couple of weeks ago about this very issue.
